Tribal route and Women- Thought and experience........by Praniti Shinde

Tribal route is a name synonymous with Jai Jui women self help groups. It was our first tryst with market linkages.

Tribal Route happened merely by co- incidence, but then again, there is no such thing as a co- incidence, it was just written and meant to happen.

Jai Jui NGO has formed several women self help groups, each group comprising of 10 – 12 women each. These women have come together because they have a common bond- of wanting to save money, earn livelihoods, stand on their own feet, feel independent, share and poverty.

Most of the women live below poverty conditions and need something to live for.

They are first spoken to. Then they learn how to save money, they are then taught some basic skills that they enjoy like- stitching, candle making, zardozi and different kinds of embroidery, jute handicrafts etc.

Once these women have learnt some of these skills well, they are then given orders. This being the most challenging part. When we started, the women had to be brought together, trained etc. once this was done, establishing marketing linkages was the most difficult task and still is esp. coz ours is an ngo and we could not afford any kind of help, we had to depend on good will and friends.

Our women were struggling and so were we. Suddenly a friend called and told me about Mamta and tribal route.

The meetings happened and our women had their first set of orders! These comprised of jute mats, jute coasters, cushion covers, mobile covers in ethnic cloth etc. The women were very excited and began working on Tribal Route orders. Of course it was very difficult to cope with the quality standards and repeated efforts and determination by both Mamta and Jai Jui and a whole lot of patience from Mamta and Tribal Route helped the women make it. Jai Jui SHGs then got consistent amount of orders from Tribal route regularly.

For the women, it has been quite a journey; they have started working hard and with a whole lot of dedication. They have been identifying themselves with the product they make. Some of the leaders have visited Tribal Route to get acquainted with the Bombay markets. The women have discovered that they are not only capable of making different and new products but also have opened up to their creative sides by exploring with colours, designs, textures that Mamta wanted them to work with. At the end of every product there is a smile of satisfaction and achievement. A lot of emotion gets attached to the product.

The women now make eco- friendly bags for tribal route! They have seen the ups and downs, the hard work, the patience, and the quality standards. At times orders have been sent back because the quality standards have fallen. This has been a tremendous learning experience for the women, who first feel dejected and low but come to realize that nothing sells on pity and poverty. They have to work towards quality. It’s as if we show them the path but they have to make their own roads! This is exactly the relationship that Tribal route shares with the Jai Jui women SHGs.

Today so many women can boast of a rich savings account thanks to Tribal Route!

Yes to EVERY destination, there is a route and each one takes his own. Now this statement has NOTHING to do with what I intend to write about.

When I heard the name, I saw spears n old weapons. I saw metallic gears. I saw Earthen stuff. Saw it all in my imagination. All because it is called 'Tribal Route'. To me, THAT is what my imagination showed. Correct with the mind scenes or not, i surely was intrigued when I came across the name. It was on Face book itself!!

I browsed, n saw some quaint artifacts. A stickler for oil burners, scented candles and incense sticks myself, I LIKED what the site showed. And, YES, I intended visiting the store too. Aram Nagar, where i often went for auditions.

As luck would have it, before I went to the cottage, I met the Partner of Tribal route!! Where? At my OWN house! And she got me, what my heart desires a LOT! Scented candles. It was for me to go see the place for my self!!

Ah!! The first rain of the season was falling as I entered the 1st cottage. I was just transformed to a village in the north. The pictures on the net, did not do justice to what i saw, or should I say, what I EXPERIENCED! Lovely colors all around, that lifted my spirits higher. Earthen pots, kadhais, kamarbandh, anklets, jhumkas, neck pieces, Chappals(WHAT CHAPPALS), oil burners, incense holders, aroma oils(they had my fav. ylang-ylang too), gullaks and sooooooooo much more. One of the most interesting things was these glass bottles that just made me wanna take up witchery, such was the effect.

AND, this was just the FIRST cottage. There were two MORE. Where I'd see tiny khatias, quilts, cushions of all shapes n sizes and much much much more. The BEST thing was a fridge from the yesteryears made of papier mache. Oh there was a LOT to see AND MORE. More than anything, everything just made me feel good. Did I buy anything!?! That is not the question! Boy did i WANT to buy EVERYTHING!!

The name 'TRIBAL ROUTE' had made me want to write, SEEING the place, compelled me to do it....

A MUST VISIT- The place has something, sometimes even WE put in the back seat, A SOUL.....

Two Floors, a sweeping staircase, a gate which is mesmerizing,an old world charm, located in midst of all the hubbub
of yari road and machlimar,yet it has found a space where cars can't go past,this allows the sound of birds to come through, the whistle of wind to be heard,so serene that time stands still,on most days you can hear the leaves rustling, the dogs barking and the birds whistling,honestly we have a bird which whistles all the time.
Some Say it is Kerala, Few call it Goa, I would say it is Tribal Route - A cottage which is unique ,different,Indian and so so special.

Most get lost at the door,gazing at the colors with child like delight.
Many of our customers want the door and the staircase, double of those want frogs from our private collections,( yup this is the place they are hidden )... triple of those want all the furniture :)...lest we forget why we are here in the first place.
The Art & the Artifacts here can cause quite a flutter in your heart,they make you look at them again again.

Though the art is another story...just like everything at Tribal Route is a story......I wonder how many of us are ready to buy Art and put it up...on our walls...without millions of thoughts about the decision.I always bought what I loved and it always fitted in with my home.
How friendly are we towards buying art for the sake of art and not as investment.
I see our customers falling in love with the art,but I wonder if Bombay life makes them look at so many other priorities.
We sell a lot of art but mostly to foreigners, ex pats,waiting for the Bombay Junta to wake up.In fact I have been contemplating this for sometime now, most go gaga, I must have this, or this will look so beautiful on my wall, oh it is just RS 5000/- oh it is just RS10000/- oh my it is wow...but then???they just sigh and move on....whatever that means.

I would love to hear from all of you...your take if you haven't been to cottage no.29 drop by and let me know,and if you have been here,then also do post your comments.All I say I love the art and I am glad to be surrounded by it :) and some day I want to have a wall full of art...completely crazy wall so full of color and forms, that everyone gasps for a breathe,now my secret is out hope the universe and all of you conspire to make it happen for me, by of course getting me the WALL :)
